anyone knows how to translate a graphic file into g code for a cnc lathe to make that part? i'm trying to use inkscape on linux to do it, but it seems inkscape doesn't produce graphs that's suitable for lathe machining. is there another good graphic program for linux i can use to do this? please help!

Hello Tie, you need a good cam package, like autocad(even an old version will work)the key is vector(lines, arcs , and curves. by end points arc centers.many programs put a bitmap in a program but its still a bitmap) get mastercam or surfcam or vert.gibbs all are good and will convert dxf or dwg files(autocad) e-mail me if you have a specific design to program Karl

Unless the part is rather simple, I find generated programs (either by a CAD program or by the "conversational control" of the machine) less practical (perfect) than manually typed in programs. I'm working with Hitachi Seiki's and find it hard to watch the machine running a program generated by the control. After modifying it, you save 30%+ time, extended toollife with less load on the machine! So instead of modifying the program, I usually write it myself. The only thing is that programming the roughing can take some time because the control doesn't have canned cycles like G71.I find CAD programs are pretty good for milling machines. But they are not so practical for lathes because the machining process is less predictable.
