Starting a career in CNC.

Chuck_H. from New York -

Hello everyone. Forgive me if something similar has been posted, but I did search the site and didn't see a similar post.

I'm wondering how hard it is to get started in CNC? After 20 years of "pulling wrenches" I want to start a new career doing CNC work. My only problem is I don't know where to start. Seems like every job listing is asking for experience, and I have yet to see a single place offer an apprentice type position. So, would anyone please help me with the following questions?

1. Is it difficult to get into a machine shop without an engineering technology degree and no experience?

2. Is there much difference in the degree earned from a trade school as compared to an AA degree from a junior college? Meaning, would the AA degree look better, to an employer, than a trade school certificate?

3. Is this a career where someone my age (late 30's) could still have a good 20-25 years to look forward to? I've just seen many times where "experienced" people were phased out for "younger and cheaper" employees in various lines of work.

If there are any other bits of info someone would like to pass along, I would appreciate it immensely. Thank you all, for your time.

I got my start in highschool at a joint vocational school. I took machine trades, Got a job 1/2 way thru my senior year in a tool and die shop and have been in the trade for 12 years now.If you have a good work record and show up for work most shops will give you a chance to get your fot in the door.Learn as many machines as you can, Experience is your best friend in this trade the more machines you have under your belt the more potential the shops will see in you.
