Erratic behaviour of CNC engraving machine

Hi, I have just started using a cipher engraving machine and a generic model vinyl plotter with windows XP and the latest Corel draw. Occasionally the output will for no apparent reason miss sections of the text and engrave/cut lines between other areas of text when it is repositioning. The erratic behaviour is not repeatable and happens at different times and areas of the job. I thought the erratic behaviour was only confined to the vinyl cutter, but the engraving machine started to display the same issues when I connected it about a month after the vinyl cutter. Can anyone please help with suggestions regarding connectivity (serial cable) or software issues XP/corel draw.
